Are you about to take your PADI Instructor Examination (IE) and feeling nervous? No worries! Many candidates make the same mistakes, but with the right preparation, you can avoid them.
1. Answering theory questions too quickly
Many candidates don't read questions carefully and make unnecessary mistakes as a result. Tip: Take your time, read every word carefully, and eliminate wrong answers before choosing. Tip 2: Ask your examiner for a scratch pad for your notes, but make sure to return it at the end of your exam.
2. Unclear briefings and debriefings
During pool and open water sessions, structure is crucial. Tip: Practice at home with a clear sequence:
What are we going to do?
Why is it important?
How do we execute it?
Use your briefing slate and write down key points so you don't forget anything. Also read the PADI Pro blog
3. Not stopping problems early enough
During rescue exercises, some candidates wait too long before intervening. Tip: If a student does something wrong, correct immediately, but in a calm and positive manner.
4. Underestimating the rescue exercise (#7)
During the unconscious diver exercise, candidates sometimes become disoriented. Tip: Practice the protocol step by step and train for efficiency, not speed: if a step doesn't work within 4 seconds, stay calm and continue after the next rescue breath. You can find an example on the PADI YouTube channel.
5. Being too nervous to perform
Nerves are normal, but they shouldn't block you. Tip: Simulate IE situations with Diveplace instructors and train under stress. The more you practice, the more confident you become.
Conclusion
Mistakes happen, but good preparation helps you minimize them. Stay calm, work in a structured way, and remember: the examiners want you to pass, not fail! Good luck with your PADI IE!
